Modak - Ganesh Chaturthi Special Recipe- How to make steamed sweet Modaks - Madak-rice flour dumpilngs with sweet coconut stuffing Steamed Modaks

Modak is a unique Maharashtrian recipes offered to lord Ganesh on first day of  Vinayaka Chaturthi .Its prepared with rice flour & sweet coconut stuffing. Modaks are steamed sweet rice flour dumplings. This dish is Lord Ganapathi's favorite dish.

Ingredients :

Rice flour - 2 cups(rice flour used is finer than regular rice flour specially available for modak)     Water - 2 cups
Salt - a pinch
Ghee - 2  tbsp

 For Stuffing :

Jaggery - 1 cup
Grated fresh coconut - 2 cups
Poppy seeds - 1 tbsp (optional)
Cardamom powder - 1 tsp
Oil as required



Preparation Method ;

  • Take a pan, add jaggery, 1 tbsp ghee & poppy seeds, mix these ingredients well & cook it on medium flame. let the jaggery melt 
  • Add grated coconut to it keep mixing & cook it till its moisturizer evaporates. Now turn off the heat, transfer this mixer to another bowl & keep it aside to cool
  • Now take another pan add 2 cups water, pinch of salt ,1 tbsp ghee cover it with lid & cook it till water comes to a boil 
  • Add rice flour & mix it. Cover it & cook it on low flame.
  • Now transfer this to a plate & knead it while it is hot by applying little water to your palms. Make a smooth dough 
  • Divide the dough into little larger than lemon size & shape them into balls 
  • To shape balls to modak, grease your palms with oil
  •  Using your thumb gently press & shape it into a katori as shown in the pic
  • Once its done put some coconut stuffing in the center & pinch its sides. Atleast 5 times. Now press all the edges & join them in the top to give the shape as shown in the above pic.
  • There should not be any cracks on the modak.
  • You can also use Modak moulds to make them
  • Now steam the modak for 10 min 
  • Modaks are ready to serve.
